hurricanes
living with hurricanes // spring 2020 elective  // prof. Aron Chang

partnership with the small center for collaborative design as part of depart-ment spring 2020 & the louisiana state museum at the presbytére to re-envision what their hurricane katrina exhibit could look like. this semester was conducted partially remotely.

this exhibit aims to help the visitor envision themselves as the decision-makers: governor kathleen blanco, mayor ray nagin, president george w. bush, et al: what information is at hand? what information is shareable? how do you limit harm to the greatest extent possible?

visitors learn about community activism and the events of the storm, before ascending to a podium in the spotlight. once there, they can hear speeches given by those aforementioned leaders, and read them from the teleprompters’ continuous scrolling. looking out at everyone, surrounded by planes of glass, whose height corresponds to the depths of floods in different new orleans neighborhoods after the levees failed, they are faced with the responsibilities and powers had by those people during a time of great need.
